On a  New York City subway train, I saw some ads posted for Motown's 50th anniversary. Each ad featured an artist and some lyrics. "I've got some records by those artists", I thought.  I was inspired to search through my many milk crates of records and perhaps strike while the Motown iron was hot.  In an e-mail to most of my previous buyers, I promised to search my inventory for Motown records.

Early Sunday afternoon, I started crate digging, looking for anything released on the Motown label or its divisions Tamla or Gordy.  After about twenty minutes I got a bright idea:  In honor of Motown's 50th anniversary, list 50 records for 50 cents each!  Unfortunately, after searching for about an hour, I was only able to scrounge up 30 records.

Now you may be thinking, “Steve is trying to use Motown's 50th anniversary to get rid of some scratchy old records.” If that's what you're thinking, then you don't know me that well. First of all, when I started looking, I had no idea what I'd find.  I have thousands of records that I've never listed on eBay and every time I look through the crates, I am surprised at what I find.  For example, I came across an Elton John bootleg record I didn't know I had, "Elderberry Wine - Recorded Live At Hammersmith Odeon In London".  And second of all, as it turned out, the quality of the vinyl of the Motown/Tamla/Gordy records I found range from VG+ (very good+) to NM (near mint).  In fact, most of them are NM!

I have to admit, it sure would be nice to get rid of these extra Lionel Richie records -- whenever I list them, they sit unsold for months.

My hope is that hundreds of eBayers will outbid each other like crazy. After all, there's only about 30 of these gems.  No doubt the low starting price will attract many Motown fans. I just can't lose!!!

Highlights:

  • Diana Ross with back-to-back Beatles covers opening side 2 of the “Everything Is Everything” album.
  • Edwin Star's “War & Peace” featuring “War” (what is it good for – absolutely nothin').
  • The Temptation singing Smokey Robinson songs on “The Temptations Sing Smokey”. Better than Smokey? You decide.
  • 2 LP sets – still just 50 cents!
  • 3 LP set (“Smokey Robinson and the Miracles Anthology”) with three brand new replacement sleeves (to replace torn sleeves) -- 50 freakin' cents!!!
  • Listing for “Gladys Knight and the Pips Anthology” has all 23 songs listed.  Most other eBay listings I looked at didn't have them or had only a few of them.
  • Many songs performed by more than one artist or group. Compare alternate versions. "Wish It Would Rain" is a good example.  Who sings it better, the Temptations or Gladys Knight?
  • Lionel Richie posing with the Commodores and thinking, “I don't need these guys.”
  • Bill Cosby “Himself” -- comedy on Motown.
  • Is it me or do the Smokey Robinson and Gladys Knight anthologies have the same cover?
  • Spanish pressing of Stevie Wonder “Talking Book” on Motown label (not Tamla) in shrink wrap with vinyl in NM condition.

Hi Ryan, I usually get the records out the next day. Lately, some have been going out a day or two later due to some family issues. But don't forget to give the postal services some credit. I've tried three different post offices and found that two of them have frequent delays. From the third one, the one I now use most often, an album I shipped to Alaska on a Saturday arrived at its destination on Monday. It seems they can't distinguish my Media Mail with the PayPal labels from Priority Mail -- the only difference is an M instead of a P. As for my shipping, my policy rewards you when you buy more albums. The problem is, I can only list 50 to 100 new items per week, so it's probably hard to find 12 records, which gives you the best shipping value, in a given week. As for ripping anyone off, how many times can someone get away with that? It's much better to be honest and get repeat business. I'll see if I can think of any other specials. It might be a good way to sell some of the stuff I've been putting aside (country, Broadway, Sinatra era, etc.). If you have any ideas, let me know.

Just wanted to let you know, Steven, that I have purchased perhaps twenty to thirty LP records from you in the past few months, and every time, I have received the shipment very quickly. I commend you on your efforts to get the shipments to me as quickly as possible! Another thing that I've noticed is that you are one of the true eBay store owners. You have never ripped me off with the shipping, like so many other sellers do! Your shipping is the most honest I have seen yet on eBay. Just wanted to let you know how I felt, and that I'll surely be doing business with you for as long as your store is around! Hopefully you will have more specials on such as the MOTOWN 50 special! Cheers! -Ryan
